Back to Spa for the Summer Classic

After a year’s enforced break, the drivers of the NK HTGT powered by Nolte Küchen were delighted to be back at Spa-Francorchamps. On this power circuit, Bob Stevens surprisingly set the fastest time in qualifying with his little Lotus Elan. Unfortunately, he would not start the race, as he rolled at the Raidillon moments later, luckily without injury to the driver. Michiel Campagne was second fastest in the Corvette Grand Sport, followed by Armand Adriaans (Ford GT40), Kaj Dahlbacka (Corvette GS) and Roelant de Waard (Shelby Mustang).

At the start, the pair of Corvettes Grand Sport took off, but pursuer Dahlbacka had to drop out when he lost a wheel. Campagne then drove to an unchallenged win, with Armand Adriaans in the great sounding Ford GT40 in second. Third on the podium was Roelant de Waard who dominated the busy GTS12 class in his Shelby Mustang. There was a mighty scrap for second in the GTs, between Jasper Izaks, Hans Hugenholtz and Marcel van Laarhoven in Shelby Mustangs and the Jaguar E-type armada consisting of Rhea Sautter, Eric Douart and Carlo Hamilton. After the mandatory pit stops in this one-hour race, the cards were shuffled and second in GTS12 was for Frenchman Douart, ahead of the duo Frans van Maarschalkerwaart/Jasper Izaks. Jos Stevens (Lotus Elan) had moved up to fifth place overall and was first in GTS10. Theo and Thijs van Gammeren won GTS11 in the Porsche 911, ahead of Egbert Kolvoort on MGB. In the touring car classes things got very exciting. Martin Bijleveld (Ford Falcon) built up a substantial lead, but after the pitstops his co-pilot Jaap van der Ende could not consolidate this. Cees Lubbers and Duncan Huisman (Ford Falcon) now appeared to have the upper hand, until a Drive Through for ignoring track limits threw a spanner in the works. Bas Jansen then? Alas, an hour was too long for his Ford Mustang. And so it was Hemmo Vriend who had kept his nose clean to take the win in his Ford Falcon. CT08 went to Sandro Hubar (Alfa Romeo GTA), after the Lotus Cortina brigade broke down. In the Mini class, the win went to father and son duo René and Thijmen de Vries.

Next race: Zolder 17-18 July.

We are finally racing again!

The first weekend of the 2021 NK HTGT powered by Nolte Küchen on the Zandvoort GP track provided plenty of excitement.

Niek van Gils was the fastest qualifier in his TVR Griffith, posting a 2:02,0 laptime. Roelant de Waard (Shelby 350) was just 0.4 of a second slower. Jos Stevens (Lotus Elan) was third fastest, in marked contrast to his son Bob who did not complete a single lap due to brake problems. Duncan Huisman was fastest of the touring cars in Cees Lubbers’ Ford Falcon, just 0,4 of a second ahead of Carlo Hamilton.

The first race was very close. It took a while to get properly underway though, as young Bob Stevens’ Lotus Elan had yet more problems. With brakes locked solid he ended up stranded on the track at the back of the circuit. That meant a long drive for the tow truck and thus a lengthy Safety Car period. A compulsory one minute pitstop between the 20th and 40th minute made keeping a lapchart interesting. After an hour of pedalling it was Niek van Gils who was just 4 seconds ahead of Roelant de Waard, with Jos Stevens in third another 4 seconds back. The touring car class was hotly contested. Initial leaders Huisman and Lubbers finished third. Carlo Hamilton came from the back to finish a strong second. Old hands Martin Bijleveld and Jaap van der Ende took the win in an all Ford Falcon podium. Jasper Izaks took the win in GTS11 sharing the MGB of Egbert Kolvoort and Rob Rappange won CT07 in his Mini Cooper. CT08 fell to the Lotus Cortina duo of Gerrit Jan van Leenen and Bert Du Toy van Hees.

Race 2 started on a slightly damp track, but the racing line dried quickly as usual in Zandvoort. Jan van Elderen was quickest away in his E-type, hotly pursued by Roelant de Waard in the Shelby Mustang. Jaap van der Ende led the touring cars from Carlo Hamilton, both in Ford Falcons. Meanwhile Jasper Izaks (Cooper S) and Bob Stevens (Lotus Elan) were moving up through the field, having started from the last row. Cor Visser then got his Austin-Healey stuck in the sand at Tarzan, bringing out the Safety Car for a while. The end of the caution period just about coincided with the opening of the pit window. Bob Stevens was one of the first to stop and subsequently went on to record some very quick laptimes. When de Waard had made his pitstop, the little Lotus was ahead and stayed ahead, Bob Stevens scoring a dominant win. De Waard came home second and took first in GTS12, from Ed van Dijk (E-type) and Jac Meeuwissen (Healey 3000). In GTS11, winners Theo and Thijs van Gammeren were Porsche mounted. They finished just 5 seconds ahead of Egbert Kolvoort in his MGB, with Frank Veenstra (MGB) taking third. There was mayhem in the touring car class. First Hamilton dropped out with engine failure, then van der Ende pitted too early and was sent on his way by the team, only to receive a stop-and-go for pitlane speeding. After the pitstops Duncan Huisman was the man on the move, taking over the lead in Lubbers’ Falcon, but Bas Jansen was not far behind in his Mustang. He was so close in fact that he was gifted the win when Lubbers/Huisman received a 10 second penalty for a pitlane infringement. Bijleveld/van der Ende salvaged third in class. In CT07 Jasper Izaks was going great guns in Rappange’s spare car, soon catching up with the class leader. The two put on a great show until Izaks had to make a pitstop with smoke pouring from under the bonnet. Thus Rappange took another win, from the father/son duo De Vries and Bert Mets. Frank Romo won the Lotus Cortina battle in CT08 this time around, beating Van Leenen/Du Toy van Hees.

HP Tyres Dunlop Racing ordering procedure (EU countries)

The technical regulations of NKHTGT powered by Nolte Küchen follow FIA appendix K rules. To comply with this, only Dunlop Racing tyres are eligible. Distributor HP Tyres informs us that all sizes are available and in stock. HP Tyres can ship the tyres by courier to EU countries. At the moment this takes a few days longer than usual due to the new post-Brexit procedures for goods exported from the UK to the EU.

HP Tyres has outlined the following simple procedures for suppliers, teams and drivers when ordering tyres:

Orders by EU Businesses
Business orders can be made by email or telephone as usual. A pro-forma invoice will be sent to the customer for payment and tyres will be dispatched once payment has been received. This invoice will be zero-rated for UK VAT. HP Tyres will ask the customer for a VAT number and EORI number. If you do not have an EORI number, this can easily be obtained. HP will dispatch the tyres and once they reach the Customs office in the country of destination, you will be contacted to pay VAT before clearance of the tyres. The amount payable will be the VAT rate of the import country, for example if sending to the Netherlands, the VAT rate of 21% will be payable to customs to clear the tyres. A small handling fee will also be applied but NO DUTY should be applied to the goods as the Dunlop Historic range are manufactured in the EU and the Brexit deal states that the duty should therefore be 0%. If you have a VAT registered business in your country, you will be able to claim back the paid VAT.

Private orders by EU Non-Business Customers
Orders can be made as usual by email or telephone. A pro-forma invoice will be sent to the customer for payment; HPTyres will calculate the customers VAT and carriage charges and HP Tyres will then pay all the taxes applicable, through their courier. The tyres will be dispatched on a door-to-door service once payment has been received.

In short, HP Tyres is making every effort to ensure that deliveries run smoothly. Prices have remained virtually unchanged compared to last year.

With sufficient orders, HP Tyres can deliver the tires to Zandvoort on the Thursday prior to our race at Zolder (July 15th 2021). Of course it is also possible to order your Dunlop tires from a supplier within the Netherlands (or another EU country) and have them take care of the import. Other suppliers include GT Autoparts in Soest and for Germany Ben Becker.

In memoriam Marius Du Toy van Hees

On Thursday our former scrutineer Marius Du Toy van Hees passed away. About 40 years ago Marius single handedly restored and race-prepared a Lotus Elite. From 1983 he competed in HARC races. He also raced internationally in the FISA European historic GT championship. After hanging up his helmet, the Lotus became a grand touring car. With his wife Marlies he travelled tens of thousands of kilometres throughout Europe. In his role as technical delegate, Marius could express his enormous love of technology. His contribution to the establishment and professionalisation of technical inspections for historic racing cars cannot not be underestimated. His almost encyclopaedic knowledge of the technology of historic cars was of enormous value in issuing FIA Historic Technical Passports and FIVA Identity Cards. In his role as chief scrutineer he subsequently checked these documents at countless races and rallies. With his always calm but strict demeanour, he was one of the pillars of the success of the NK HTGT. Marius had been seriously ill for some time and passed away on Thursday morning. Marius will be deeply missed by the historic racing fraternity. We wish Marlies and the rest of the family lots of courage to cope with this loss.

NKHTGT 2021 is ready to go

Our race at the Hockenheimring turned out to be a false start, but we are confident that we can begin our anniversary season at Zandvoort on June 4 and 5 with a pair of old fashioned 1-hour races.
After that we go to Belgium. First stop is Spa-Francorchamps for he Summer Classic on June 25 and 26. Three weeks later – July 16, 17 and 18 – we race at Circuit Zolder, where the NKHTGT has not been since 2007. High time for a renewed acquaintance! Next stop is the Assen TT-circuit, where there will be the traditional Gamma Racing Day on August 6, 7 and 8. Hopefully with packed grandstands as the NK HTGT is always a crowd favourite. We will celebrate our 25th anniversary in style at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. On 3 and 4 September, we will be supporting the Hankook 24H Series. A unique occasion with the first evening race in the history of the NKHTGT: we will see the late summer sun set on Friday evening during a 50 minute race. On Saturday, we will have another 3o minute race. The 25 year success of the NK HTGT is thanks to our trusted competitors. They will all receive a special anniversary present: the Barcelona event is free for all participants with an NKHTGT package deal 2021! We will end our 2021 season in France. On October 8, 9 and 10 we will be back with our friends at the Circuit Dijon-Prenois.for the Dijon Motors Cup.
The NK HTGT powered by Nolte Küchen 2021 will feature no less than 31 regular participants. With restrictions being relaxed, we are expecting more entries from our regular foreign guests. At the moment, individual entries are still available for all races. If you have a pre-’66 FIA-compliant touring car, GT or GTP, you are very welcome to come and race with us! All information can be found on the website www.nkhtgt.nl. Any questions just mail us at race@nkhtgt.nl.

NKHTGT season start Hockenheimring April 16th, 17th and 18th cancelled

Unfortunately, we have had to make the hard decision to cancel the NKHTGT season start at the Hockenheimring on 16 – 18 April 2021. At the moment, travel through Germany is only permitted for necessary purposes and, moreover, there is a quarantine obligation in Germany as well as upon return to the Netherlands, in addition to mandatory COVID-19 tests. Despite our attempts it will not be possible to obtain an exemption for NKHTGT participants, as participation in historic car races is not considered as a necessary travel goal.

We take this decision now because we don’t want our participants to prepare for an event that is to be cancelled. It is highly unlikely that the corona measures will be relaxed on either side of the border before April 15th, allowing travel in Germany without corona restrictions. Package deal subscribers that have paid the registration fee will receive a refund for this event shortly.

We remain optimistic that measures will become less stringent and that the further events on our calendar can go ahead as planned, so at this moment we are hopeful that we can start the NKHTGT season at Zandvoort on June 4th and 5th with two 61 minute races.

Please note that the ‘Zolder Superprix ‘ event at the Omloop van Terlaemen in Zolder has been moved forward by one week. So adjust your schedules, the event it is now to be held on July 16th, 17th and 18th.

The mandatory Dunlop L and M section tires are available as usual and the prices of our partner HP Tires Ltd (www.hptyres.com, telephone +44 (0) 1327 301887, email office@hptyres.com) have remained almost the same as. You do have to take into account delays at customs as a result of Brexit. So don’t wait until the last moment before ordering. You can also obtain Dunlop tires through Cees ‘Klapband’ Kamphorst of GT Race Tire Service in Soest, Netherlands.

The NK HTGT regulations for 2021 have been approved by the KNAF and can be found on our website: https://www.nkhtgt.nl/en/competitors-information/

In memoriam René Wallner

A sad tiding: our Austrian racing friend René Wallner has left us. In 2018 he joined the NK HTGT with his Lotus Cortina, a car he had already been running for many years. His racing experience was clear to see, as he was immediately up to speed, scoring 4 class wins that year. Unfortunately, from time to time his health forced René to miss a race. However when he was with us, he gave it 100% on the track. At Dijon in 2019 he again showed everyone a clean pair of heels and took home a couple of 1st place trophies. Of course 2020 was a lost season for everyone, but we were really looking forward to having René with us again in 2021. Alas, it is not to be. René was an extremely friendly and sympathetic man, he will be very much missed in the paddock. Rest in peace René.
